September 2008: The “Klondike” Drill Rig receives a Facelift
BP Alaska’s unique coil tubing work over Drill Rig the “Klondike” receives a new paint job. Compositech workers worked around the clock in extreme weather conditions to sand blast and coat the entire Drill Rig. The project took place at Compositech’s Coatings Facility Pad in Deadhorse, Alaska. The time critical project was completed with a perfect safety record and meeting strict a budget.

August 2008: BP Seawater Treatment Plant (STP), Prudhoe Bay, Alaska
The 25-year-old Seawater Treatment Plant (STP) planned for a shut down to clean mud and silt out of their intake reservoirs. These sediments, when they build up, cause operational problems that damage internal housings and pump seals.

July 2008: Compositech Coatings Division Sandblasts and Coats “Dice” at STP
The large steel “Dice” that greets all when visiting BP’s Seawater Treatment Plant (STP), were in desperate need of a new coating. STP is located on the edge of the Arctic Ocean and years of salt-water spray had taken its toll on the coating. Compositech Coatings crew sand blasted and recoated the Dice. The Dice now stand proud once again.

July 2008: Compositech Repairs Leaking Roof at BP Flow Station 1 in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska
An aging roof was in need of repair at Flow Station 1. 3 inches of foam and elastomeric coating were to be stripped off and replaced. Compositech crews working off of a crane ball for fall protection stripped and re-applied the 3 inches of foam and 80 mills of polyurea elastomeric coating. The project was completed on time, under budget, and with no safety incidents.

June 2008: Ft. Knox Gold Mine Fairbanks, Alaska
The largest gold mine in North America, Ft. Knox Gold Mine was planning for mine expansion. The mine contracted North Star Construction to measure the depth of the tailings pond. This presented a challenge to get a drill rig out on to the tailings pond - the material has a consistency of a wet concrete. North Star Construction turned to Compositech to supply Dura-Base Composite mats to provide a solid portable surface capable of supporting a small drill rig. The project was completed at the amazement of many that thought it impossible to build a road over the tailings.

June 2008: Badami Alaska Tanker Vessel/Separator Coatings Project
Looking to possibly restart the long shut-off oil field Badami, much maintenance was needed to get the facility back online. Compositech was dispatched to blast and re-coat 7 tanks with a 2-part epoxy at 10-14 mills.
The project proved challenging since Badami is only accessible by aircraft in the summer months. Logistics and planning were a key component to a successful project. The project was supported by the Compositech Deadhorse (North Slope) facility.

May 2008: Milne Pt., Alaska
Compositech crews apply two part epoxy coating to pipeline girth welds at Milne Pt. for BP Alaska. The project consisted of building heated enclosures, sand blasting, QC, and coating the girth weld (pipe joint).

May 2008: SKW Eskimos Inc. contracts Compositech to coat 8” Piles for Barrow, Alaska Project.
Compositech Flame Spray Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE)
The project consisted of applying 10 mills of FBE coatings over 10 mills of Zinc. Compositech utilized a unique “Flame Spray” system to quickly coat the Piles. The Flame spray system eliminated the need to send the Pipe to a Foundry to Hot dip Galvanize. This process also eliminates the need for an elaborate powder coating system such as an Induction coil to cure the FBE coating.
Flame spray coatings have revolutionized the way we can apply coating in the field. Galvanizing and FBE coatings can be applied in the field with minimal support equipment. A key industry that can benefit from this service is FBE Pipeline field joint coating.

May 2008: BP Endicott Alaska Pig Launcher Coatings
Compositech's coatings crew took on the task of blasting and coating a pig launcher and receiver. As with any coating work on the North Slope, an enclosure was built to contain blast media and to provide a controlled work area.

April 2008: Compositech Announces Tank Coating Division/Facility
Compositech announces the opening of the first intrinsically safe class 1/div 1 coatings facility in Deadhorse, Alaska. The 40’ by 100' space will be renovated to meet requirements for an intrinsically safe (explosion proof) tank coatings facility. The facility will provide year-round operation for blasting and coating mobile tanks.

February 2008: Compositech Announces the Opening of North Slope Operations Center
Located directly across from the Alaska Airlines terminal in Deadhorse, Alaska, Compositech's new 10,000 sq. ft. shop and offices will support all North Slope field operations and activities. November 2007: BP DOT Pipeline Marker Project
In order to comply with new Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations requiring pipeline markers to clearly identify oil, water and gas lines, BP Alaska turned to Compositech to design a simple mounting system and install 800 individual pipeline markers throughout the greater Prudhoe Bay area. Compositech responded by designing a simple u-channel mounting bracket made from UHMW plastic. The channel was fastened by a simple banding system. Compositech met the challenging deadline by installing all 800 markers inside 7 weeks in severe winter conditions.

November 2006: Alaska Resource Development Council Annual Conference
Alaska Governor Sara Palin visits the Compositech vendor booth at 2006 ARDC conference. Pictured with the Governor is Compositech CEO Dennis Swarthout.
The Governor learned how Compositech has helped exploration companies in Alaska access environmentally challenging areas with little or no impact to the environment. This has been accomplished by the utilization of Compositech’s Dura-Base Composite road matting systems.

July 2006: Aurora Gas Long Lake 2 Well, Cook Inlet, Alaska
Located on the West side of the Cook Inlet the Long Lake 2 was drilled during the summer months. Compositech supplied Aurora gas with the Durabase mats that provided a solid surface road as well as a establish a solid surface Drill site. Aurora Well Service drilled the well for Aurora Gas.
Dave Bolens, the VP of Alaska operations for Aurora Gas, explains: “This was an exploration well; the mats saved a lot of money and environmental impact as we did not have to haul as much gravel to the site. Since the well turned out to be dry, there was no need for a permanent pad. Less gravel on the pads results in the natural re-vegetation process to occur sooner.”

2006: Crowley Marine Hovercraft Hanger Floor, West Dock Prudhoe Bay, Alaska
Crowley Marine under contract with BP Alaska to operate a Hovercraft to provide transportation to and from BP’s North Star Island.
North Star Island is a man made island approximately 4 miles off shore in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Crowley Marine installed Dura-Base Composite Mats provided by Compositech to establish a solid surface floor in Crowley’s Hovercraft hanger.

August 2005: Matsu Valley Medical Center, Wasilla, Alaska
The Medical Center was in need a durable and easy to clean flooring surface.

June 2005: Ted Stevens International Airport
Alaska Airlines opted to install an attractive yet tough and easy to clean system floor system for their baggage area and locker rooms.
Compositech’s Solution: Methyl Methacrylate (MMA), a fluid applied system. MMA offers an eye-catching non-slip surface that is both anti-microbial and durable. There are a wide variety of colors, styles, and effects to choose from.

February 2005: Prudhoe Bay, Alaska - BP CCP Fin Fan Bay Coatings Repair
Inside the fin fan bay area the concrete was old, dilapidated, and leaking. Water penetration was causing corrosion to the pan decking and sub-straight.
Compositiech's solution was to strip and shot blast the sub-straight creating a new profile. Envirolastic polyurea coating was sprayed to achieve a 100% containment system.

September 2004: Composite Fiberglass Super Panel Well Floor Kit
Alaskan oilfield producers ConocoPhillips and BP Alaska face unique challenges in stabilizing the ground of well cellars. The issue is the thawing of the permafrost deep in the ground below the wellhead. Over time, the gravel around the well tree subsides or sinks. This creates a safety concern with personnel stepping into a well house and possibly into a hole.

2003: Exxon/Mobile Sakhalin Island, Russia

No road to your destination? Fairbanks company lets you pack one along

FAIRBANKS - A small Fairbanks company is on the road to success as the Alaska and Russian Far East distributor of environmentally friendly polyethylene road mats.
"This is the perfect solution to creating a road system in rural Alaska," says Dennis Swarthout, chief executive officer of Compositech LLC.
The mats were first employed to replace heavy wooden planks used on the slope by BP Exploration (Alaska) for roads over the tundra, and for drill site pads.
"When we came up with this proposal to use these Dura-Base mats up on the Slope, the producers jumped at the chance to replace the heavy, expensive wood planks traditionally used," Swarthout said.

Fairbanks firm builds mats to protect tundra from oil rigs

Fairbanks-based Compositech LLC is reselling a bolt-together road surface called Dura-Base. It also is building heavier-duty mats used to protect the tundra from the weight of oil rigs.
The idea is not unlike the coasters that protect table tops from libations at the Fairbanks bar where Dennis Swarthout and Craig Simon sketched up the idea in 1999. Shortly after, the men formed Compositech LLC and turned their bar-napkin doodle into a highly engineered product they say is stronger, lighter and safer than massive wood-and-steel mats that have historically been used at Alaska's oil fields.
"This is the best, meanest drill rig mat known to man," Simon said.
The company said their newfangled fiberglass "safety mat" also can be used as a loading ramp, boat launch, shop floor or as a temporary bridge. They can be used in sequence over muddy roads and muskeg to leapfrog drill rigs and heavy machinery from site to site.
BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. has leased 50 of the Fairbanks-made drill rig mats for the past year. So far, they are getting high marks from BP and other oil companies.

PAC COM Expo exhibitors display the latest in products, services, equipment, and technology for the oil, construction and mining industries. Attendees include top officials from both the government and private sector.

CASE STUDY: Trading Bay, Alaska
An operator, seeking to drill within a mile inland of Trading Bay, Alaska, was required to coordinate land and water-based transportation to bring the rig and equipment to the location to begin operations. Permitting for the construction and operation of the rig zone was made more complex by the presence of wetlands throughout the area.
The rig operator applied for a permit under Section 404 and specified the use of composite matting for a temporary road and drilling pad in the wetland locations. The NWP-6 was awarded to the operator based upon the minimal impact the project would have on the wetland through the use of composite matting.
